Wow, over a year and no posts. >_<

Moving on. I need a crinoline/petticoat for a dress. I'm no stranger to a sewing machine, but I can't make things without some sort of pattern. I'm plus sized so I can't find a paper pattern that works for me. All the tutorials online kind of freak me out.

My question is: Should I attempt to make a petticoat, or just say f'it and buy one? I rarely need one, but I would like to have 2-3 in different colors. If I bought them I'd be spending over $100 for all three.

Suggestions?

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to join a brand new community, sm_avatars. Whether you’re already on Sailor Moon Avatars, thinking of joining, or know someone who’d like to join, all are welcome! I promise I'll try to make it as active as possible. Also, both joining and posting is open, because I want to make this something everyone can use and enjoy, not my own little private club. So feel free to jump right in--I'll be making a post myself once we get a few members.

sarcasm_hime has been left in a hotel lurch and is looking for roomies at Dragon*con. They're quiet, polite, and probably won't be in the room much since she's a major cosplayer. Stu is a sweetie too. You'll never know he's there. The room is at the Marriott for Friday and Saturday night and it's a 2 bed/NS. The rate is $150 per night plus tax to be divided between the number of occupants. If you want to stay with them PLEASE either reply to this comment or in sarcasm_hime's LJ. Thanks.

The main reason I'm posting is because I wanted to give a heads up to those who are rooming/might be rooming with me at Dragoncon. The con rate is booked. $150 plus tax a night for a 2 bed NS for Friday and Saturday. Not bad since it's normally $240. I know the con goes till Monday, but I'm already using up most of my vaca for my move in 2 months. Anyway, if you want crash space lemme know asap. Arigato!

Ok, I have a fabic trip planned in April to Mary Jo's fabrics in NC (along with a bus-full of crafty ladies). It's mecca for those of us who don't have anything decent around. *le sigh* Dad bought me some leather so I can make the outer corset and accessories for Jessica. Thank goodness he kept his leather tools. Mom has keep hording beads and things for me as well. The only thing waiting to be figured out is...How the hell do I make a corset?!?

Normally I would buy one online. I have no problem with this except I really want to know how to make one of my own. That and I hope to loose a decent amount of weight by Dragoncon, so it would suck if I ordered it too soon and it didn't fit right anymore. Picky yes, but I don't want to throw away money.

Any ideas on where I can look online for tutorials? I want to make a basic hip to bust corset, perhaps with a boob-holder. I'm so damn technical. ^_^ Help. Please?

Ok, the character has red hair, while I have lightish brown. The hair style isn't difficult for real hair, but for a wig it would require interweaving and (possibly) a permanent setting. In the interest of time, ease, and money, is it better to forgo accuracy for a better overall look?

First, thanks for the suggestions to help with Pepper. They really made me think! Sadly, that thinking has led me to feel that I really can't make a good Pepper in a month and a half. She'll be waiting for Dragoncon though...Anyway, I still want to cosplay, but now I'm reduced to something quick. Bah. Any suggestions?

As you know from the Pepper pics, I'm chunky (but working on it). That does limit my costume choices. I firmly believe spandex is a privilage, not a right. That being said, I need help finding a good costume. I thought about perhaps Safety from Risky Safety. The wig would be a problem...and I was kind of hoping to find something I could put together with clothes off the rack...

*pounds head on desk* Argh! I want to make a costume, not half-ass it, but I just don't have time. This is the thing that sucks about having two jobs. Now that I have more than $20 to put to a costume I simply don't have the man-hours to make it. *cries*

And yes, I know I'm being whiney and wishy-washy. ^_^

Ok, as I mentioned I'm am definatly a level 1 newbie at cosplay. My skills are heming pants, heming pants...and heming pants. This being said I need some tips for my latest project.

First, a confession. I bought this costume online from Limebarb. *sheepish look* At the time I didn't have a sewing machine or a place to even attempt a costume. I have made several alterations to it though, as no costume ever really fits right. I don't think of it as completely cheating, just taking a small short cut. Besides, I'm trying to learn. Anyway...

I'm going to Katsucon next year, and since it's my first one in nearly 2 years I definatly want to do something nice. Several friends have helped me decide to re-do my classic Pepper costume. Problem is, I don't know quite how to do it.

Cut for sanity's sakeCollapse )
My initial idea was to make her more etherial. Wispy layers of sheer fabric on top of a solid green base. No problem, except for the black bands on both the empire waistline and arms. Also the problem with the wings pops up. Attached? Unattached? Argh!

One possiblity my mother suggested was to spruce up the old costume. I put side panels in to give it more body, but it really didn't need that. It ended up giving the dress an uneven look. The wings are sew into the back, which makes washing nearly impossible. They also crumple very easily which makes me less than thrilled. There's also a snag where it caught in the sewing machine. This is usually covered by the purse, but it's still noticable.

Any ideas? And yes, I know buying my only costume does not a cosplayer make, but at least I'm fessing up to my shortcomings.
